What Is a 500,000 GPD Industrial Brackish Water RO System?

If you need water treatment on a true industrial scale, a 500,000 GPD reverse osmosis (RO) system is one of the most effective and reliable water treatment solutions available. This is not a standard commercial RO unit. This plant-scale system is designed for factories, large hotels, hospitals, and industrial facilities where both water quality and production volume are critical.

What Brackish Water Actually Means in the UAE Context

Brackish water falls between freshwater and seawater in terms of salinity. Much of the groundwater and even some municipal water sources in the UAE contain Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels between 1,000 and 10,000 mg/L, classifying them as brackish water. This level of salinity is too high for most industrial processes without treatment, but it is far easier and less energy-intensive to treat than seawater.

How Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis Works

A brackish water RO system uses pressure to force feedwater to pass through a partially permeable membrane. The membrane rejects dissolved salts, minerals, heavy metals, bacteria, and other contaminants, allowing only purified permeate water to pass through. The concentrated reject stream (brine) is discharged separately. At 500,000 GPD capacity, this process runs continuously, producing around 347 gallons of treated water every minute at standard operating conditions.

System Components and Build Quality

All systems supplied by Aqua Hygiene are constructed over a heavy duty carbon steel frame coated with epoxy for corrosion protection in the UAE industrial environment. The highlights include the following.

  • Multimedia pre-filtration

    Removes suspended solids, sand, and large particles from the feedwater before it reaches the membranes, protecting the system and extending membrane life

  • Anti-scalant dosing system

    Doses scale inhibitors to the feedwater to inhibit calcium, magnesium and silica deposition on the membrane surface while running.

  • High pressure pump and motor

    Based on the operating pressure and flow of the system, the high pressure pump/motor is rated for the system and protected by pressure switches from low pressure damage.

  • RO membrane vessels

    ASME-rated pressure vessels housing DuPont FilmTec or equivalent brackish water membrane elements rated for continuous high-pressure operation.

  • Stainless steel high-pressure piping

    All piping on the high-pressure side of the system is stainless steel, eliminating corrosion risk at operating pressures that would damage standard fittings

  • Automated control panel

    PLC based controller that provides digital TDS monitoring, pressure readings, permeate and concentrate flow meters, and high and low pressure alarm systems.

  • Low and high water level sensors

    Protect both the feed tank and the product water storage from overflow or dry-run conditions

  • Auto flush sequence

    The system flushes membranes automatically on startup and shutdown, reducing biological fouling between operating cycles

Why Custom Sizing Matters at This Scale

Undersized systems that operate at 500,000 GPD will overwork the system and dramatically decrease membrane life. A one that is too big will not be economically viable for recovery.
